There is an old saying that you get back more than what you give. It has been true for me. As a volunteer for the Tri-Valley Writers and other nonprofit organizations in the area, I have had opportunities to meet people I would never have encountered otherwise. Many of these people have become lifelong friends. As a Tri-Valley volunteer, you are given an opportunity to work alongside other members and learn more about the club. I encourage you to volunteer and learn new skills that can make you feel good about yourself. It also looks good on your bio.

April is National Poetry Month, a celebration to increase awareness and appreciation of our beloved poets. Take a moment this month and read a poem. Below is an excerpt from An April Day”  by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882).

When the warm sun, that brings
Seed-time and harvest, has returned again,
‘T is sweet to visit the still wood, where springs
The first flower of the plain.

The buzz at the San Francisco Writers Conference this year was all about critique groups. I thought this might be a good time to remind everyone that one of the benefits of being a Tri-Valley Writers member is access to critique groups. I have belonged to one for years and I can’t imagine how I’d get along without their input. Hector Timourian leads the TVW stem group, where you learn to give and receive useful critiques and the basic protocol of what it means to be a part of a good critique group. Send Hector an email today and let him know you are interested.

January 2013 President’s Message from Paula Chinick

Once again, we are faced with a new year and all it can throw at us. I’ve decided not to set any lofty goals that make me crazy at the end of the year because I didn’t achieve them.

My only resolution is not to worry which path to take because I know I can always backtrack – and I hope the same for you.

November 2012 President’s Message from Paula Chinick

NaNoWriMo begins on November 1st  (one minute after midnight on Halloween). It’s a great personal challenge to write a 50,000-word novel by November 30.  Last year, I wrote the second in a trilogy and found an ending to my first storyline. It’s easy to sign up and you can connect with others and watch their progress along with your own. Try it – you’ll like it!

October 2012 President’s Message from Paula Chinick

The old adage practice, practice, practice are words a writer needs to live by. To be a writer who produces quality work means the constant development of your technique. Hone your craft by attending writing classes, lectures, seminars, or workshops.
