Linda Joy Myers, President & Founder of National Association of Memoir Writers, May 18, 2019

When you write a memoir, you draw layers of challenge and skill: telling your story, having it reach the hearts of others, and managing the labyrinth of doubts and fears about consequences of revealing your personal truths.

Linda Joy Myers will discuss key elements to unlocking your story in her topic, “The Magic of Memoir—Weaving Memory and Story.” By weaving truth and craft, you create new insights for yourself and the arc of your story will lead to meaningful takeaways for your readers.

In this session you will learn:

  • How to discover the major moments that create the theme of your memoir
  • How to weave through time
  • The power of writing scenes to create insight in the writer and the reader
  • The inner and outer critics—how to manage them
  • Ways to focus deeply into your story and allow it to have its own path

The journey of writing a memoir offers you an opportunity to stand in the shoes of who you were in past while you also explore your story through the eyes of yourself now. Learning to write strong scenes is an important skill that allows you to dip into the stream of time, to taste and know and feel that time, and to bring the reader into that world.

Linda Joy Myers, Ph.D., MFT, is president and founder of the National Association of Memoir Writers. She’s the author of the prize-winning memoirs Don’t Call Me Mother and Song of the Plains, and two books on writing craft, The Power of Memoir and Journey of Memoir.

She is co-author with Brooke Warner of Breaking Ground on Your Memoir and The Magic of Memoir. A therapist and memoir coach, Myers helps people dive deep into writing their truths while crafting a publishable story. Her monthly programs on NAMW offer tools about breaking silence, developing a powerful story, and finding the best publishing path.
