C. S. Lakin will present a special three-hour workshop on “Emotional Mastery for Fiction Writers” at the Tri-Valley Writers January 21, 2023 meeting. The emotional landscape of fiction is the greatest challenge for writers, yet it is perhaps the most important element because readers want to care. And they can’t care about characters unless writers effectively, evocatively, and masterfully show emotion in their characters.
In this workshop, you’ll be given techniques to help spark emotional response in your readers.
There are two facets of emotion in fiction: conveying what your character is feeling and evoking emotion in your reader. We’ll look at these two facets separately and in-depth. Yet, they are intrinsically connected.
Emotional mastery requires writers to set up the dynamics of a scene in such a visual, textural way that readers can’t help but feel what they are meant to feel.
This workshop will challenge you to become an “emotion master.” Are you ready and willing to go on this journey deep into emotional territory? If you want your characters to move your readers, take the plunge!
Here are some of the essential things you will learn in this workshop:
- The three key ways to show emotion in your characters and which one is the most powerful
- What the action-reaction cycle is all about, and why you must understand it to be an emotional master
- Why you need to manipulate your readers’ emotions, and why that’s a good thing
- How to recognize complex emotion and transfer that onto the page
- What micro-tension is and why it’s essential for emotional mastery
- Ways to craft mood that will evoke emotion in readers
- How to find the perfect balance of showing and telling emotion in your characters

Lakin loves keeping busy, but she especially loves writing, teaching, and helping writers. Over the years she has seen many aspiring writers struggle with the craft and their writing life. So, in addition to sharing more than a million words on her instructive blog, she decided to do what she could to make writing books as easy and clear as possible. And while there are lots of books on how to write a novel, Lakin has her own methods. Over the last thirty years, she has learned what works and what doesn’t for herself and other writers. She wants to help writers save time and aggravation by providing blueprints that lay out a clear framework for structuring novels. Check out her many books in The Writer’s Toolbox HERE.
Lakin is the fiction track director at the prestigious San Francisco Writers Conference. She teaches at writers’ conferences and retreats around the country.
