Nina Schuyler, author of The Translator, will discuss “How to Write Stunning Sentences” as Tri-Valley Writers June speaker. Some of what attendees will learn includes: What sentences do you craft to capture anxiety? Thought? A reminiscent narrator? What kind of sentence creates a feeling of euphoria? Of exhaustion? The style of the sentence—the diction, imagery, syntax, rhythm, and sound—isn’t frivolous decoration, but content. And it’s not necessarily what your English teacher would teach! By the end of this meeting, you will have mastered the art of writing sentences that do more than move the story along.
Nina is the author of The Translator, which won the 2014 Next Generation Indie Award for General Fiction and was shortlisted for the Saroyan International Writing Award. Her first novel, The Painting, was nominated for the Northern California Book Award and named a Best Book by the San Francisco Chronicle. She’s also the author of How to Write Stunning Sentences, published in 2018 by Fiction Advocate. She teaches creative writing in the graduate program at the University of San Francisco.
