Awakening the Muse by Camille Thompson

When I read the post from Karl, our website coordinator, I felt that familiar tingle. Not that tingle. Karl was soliciting blog posts for the TVW website. I meant the sensation I feel when my muse is awakened. Inspiration.

Writing has been a passion for as long as I can remember. I never cease to be surprised by what inspires me to write. Like that time on the drive home from visiting my mother at assisted living. Or chatting over a latte with a childhood friend I had recently reconnected with, and listening to her tales of being bullied daily at the hands of her high school classmates. Or the email from a fellow writer that publishers of an anthology she had submitted to were soliciting true stories about home improvement projects gone wrong. “They especially need electrical stories,” Stacey wrote. I dashed out a draft in record time of my near-death experience replacing a feisty doorbell and sent it to her to critique.

But it isn’t always so easy to get the creative juices flowing. I resisted starting a blog, fearing the pressure of making regular posts. Once my work was chosen for a national publication, I was encouraged to create a presence on the internet. I published a website on WordPress, but have yet to announce it to friends and family – shhh. I’m populating it with past pieces and links to friends’ blogs. Only when it is fat and sassy with enough variety to interest a regular visitor will I share it with the world.

Karl’s post re-ignited my passion. His challenge to write 300 words for our member blog was irresistible.

What inspires you?
